Possible to install on password protected pages?
March 10, 2014 04:56AM
Hello, I'm new here and have a newbie question:

My client has a PDF catalog of documents that was until now search enabled with Google.
He now doesn't want anymore his catalog to be indexed by Google and prefers to password protect his folders.

Will it be possible to install and use Sphider on a password protected section?

Thanks!

I have a similar question in that I would like to install a search feature on a protected directory. Is it as simple as adding the search files in that protected directory?

Thanks.

No, before the server will transmit the protected page content, the indexer needs to send the authentication (name and password). Otherwise the server will answer with the authentication form. All this is performed by the HTTP protocol, send and received, while trying to establish the connection (HTP 401 code). This procedure needs to be repeated for each page to be indexed. Unlike the original Sphider, Sphider-plus is able to handle and index password protected content.
