Problem with arabic language
April 29, 2007 06:28PM
Hello everyobdy.
First I want to thank you for this great piece of code.
Actually I am trying to use Sphider with one of my websites which includes a mix of english and arabic pages.
English pages are correctly indexed, however none of the arabic pages is indexed, and I am getting an error message like: "Data too long for column 'keyword' at row 1"
Please note that my pages are UTF-8 encoded.
Any help will be appreciated.

Keep in mind that during installation of your database, the length of keywords is set only to 30 characters. (keyword varchar(30) not null,).
Increase this to 255 and try to index again. Also ensure, that database collation is set to utf8_bin

Tec, thanks for your reply.
Actually not even a single arabic word is getting indexed, (eventually there are arabic words shorter than 30 chars :-) )
I have set Keyword length to 255 and the DB collation to utf8_bin but to no avail.
Any idea please?

Sorry, but not from me. Having no experience with Arabic characters, I can't be helpful.
Last (very poor) idea:
Use fresh index and not Sphiders Reindex. But I'm sure you know this.
Hope you will get a solution from someone who solved that problem.
Best success
Tec
