is it possible, when clicking on a search result, to navigate to the point in the page where that result is first encountered, rather than just the top of the page?

I don't think that would be possible (at least efficiently) since an anchor would need to exist in the page.

Jump to a word will be a bit difficult, but more standard is a search highlight. That makes the search word easy to find. Link with info.

would be nice to see such functionality added to Sphider -- i've used other scripts that highlight search terms, but don't recall any that navigate to the first instance of the search term. Several Firefox extensions modify the rendered code and i would guess that any search engine that highlights words is doing the same, so adding anchors should be trivial once the ability is incorporated. This is the one big disadvantage of Sphider IMO.

Thanks for the link wimb.

Right, in order to do this effectively either:
A. A browser plug-in would to be installed by the end user.
B. The site owner would need to add some tags, be it JS or otherwise, in order for this concept to work.

In either of the above use cases, it wouldn't work as sphider.Man requested.

No plug-in, just plain javascript in the search engine should be enough to do that.
Look at how work WYSIWYG like tinymce.
